When it comes to the dark winter nights causing fatigue and depression, Nottingham entrepreneur Mark Golding knows all about it.
Mark suffers with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which is a debilitating condition causing fatigue and depression as a result of low light levels during gloomy winter days. Indeed, Marks condition was so severe that he almost quit university as a result of his condition.
After investing the last of his student money in a light box, designed to alleviate SAD symptoms, Mark’s symptoms were completely cured within only three days of using the product.
Mark was so impressed by the effects of the britebox that he finished his degree, did a further three years training as a counsellor and started up his own business with a light box which he designed himself, called the 'britebox'. Mark says "In those days, light boxes were basically wooden boxes with lights in… I wanted to produce a light box, which would be both functional, stylish and more accessible for the sufferer".
Studies have shown that up to 30% of the UK population are needlessly suffering with various degrees of SAD with symptoms including extreme fatigue and listlessness, anxiety, depression, carbohydrate craving and disturbed sleep. SAD can strike with devastating effect, regardless of sex, race, class or occupation.
But the outlook for SAD sufferers need not be bleak. Clinical consensus guidelines recommend light therapy as a first-line treatment for SAD and tests have shown that, after 3-4 days of 30 minute sessions of light therapy, a staggering 75-85% of SAD sufferers feel better. Some need as little as 20 minutes.
Mark says: "I feel so passionately about the benefits of light treatment for SAD sufferers that I want to make more people aware of it and of what they might be suffering from. Light treatment can be a very simple answer for so many people".
But it is not just Mark who is convinced of the benefits. Four years on from setting up his business and he already has thousands of customers who have benefited from using Britebox. He has quadrupled referrals from UK GP’s and recently the American Psychiatric Association has recognised the efficacy of light therapy culminating in GMTV doing a report on light therapy and britebox.
Mark says: "It’s taking some effort to raise the awareness of SAD and how it can be treated with the Britebox, however, it is heartening to know that others are increasingly finding the benefits of light therapy."
